Dove Cameron Opens Up About Being Queer Amid Anti-LGBTQ Legislation: ‘It’s a Very, Very Scary Time Right Now’
Dove Cameron first rose to fame for her work playing the title roles on the Disney Channel’s “Liv and Maddie” followed by her starring role in the “Descendants” franchise.
Now 27, she returns for the second season of “Schmigadoon!” as Jenny Banks, a character based on Sally Bowles from “Cabaret.” The sophomore season of the Apple series, titled “Schmicago!,” is inspired by Broadway musicals of the 1960 and ‘70s.
“It was transformative, an education awakening for so many of us,” Cameron says of the legacy of “Cabaret” on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “Especially, I’m sure you can relate, but growing up as a queer person and seeing queer voice in an environment that was also so sexually liberated — those two things coupled together were really healing and necessary to see growing up for me to become the person that I am. Dove Cameron Says Liv and Maddie are Part of the LGBTQ+ Community

Luckily, Dove Cameron put some fans speculations to rest yesterday on Twitter when she shared details on the characters she's played. First, she confirmed that Maddie from the punch Disney show Liv and Maddie was bisexual.
It started out when the openly bisexual actress retweeted a fan who used a meme to gesture out how girly Liv was in comparison to her tomboy sister Maddie. The tweet says, "me when i date a human / me when i date a woman."
When a fan tweeted at her saying, "Still not convinced liv was straight," Dove said, "Maddie was definitely gay."
And when another fan wanted confirmation on Maddie's sister, Liv, Dove said that Liv is bisexual.

“I’ve hinted about my sexuality for years while being afraid to spell it out for everybody,” she told Gay Times in June 2021. “I went on Instagram Exist and said ‘Guys, I really needed to explain something to you. Maybe I haven’t said it, but I’m super gay. This is something I long to represent through my harmony because it’s who I am.’”
Following the release of her anthem “We Belong,” which was featured in the film After We Collided, Dove spoke with the After series’ author Anna Toddin a livestream. During one part of their conversation, the duo chatted about the lyric video for Dove’s single. “It had moving line drawings of people falling in love,” she told Gay Times. “It was all a guy and a woman making out and it was a weird moment for me. It was so bizarre that I had to ask to mix in different orientations. People started asking for hints about the video and I used different combinations of emoji couples making out.”
