The story of Caribbean rum cannot be told without referencing Mount Gay. The brand promotes Mount Gay as the oldest continuously operating rum distillery in the world, dating website to at least 1703. However, recently discovered records advise distillation took place on the distillery site even further back. A 1654 indenture (a type of legal document) held by the Barbados Museum and Historical Society refers to the plantation land:

This indenture made the one and twenty afternoon of September in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and fifty four
Three coppers one still with mill finalize.

The description is shorthand for a typical estate setup: a sugar mill, a boiling home with coppers, and a pot still.

The Mount Gay estate was previously recognizable as Mount Gilboa. In 1747 John Sober purchased it and assigned its day-to-day management duties to Sir John Gay Alleyne, a baronet, politician, and speaker of the Barbados House of Assembly. The Sober family renamed Mount Gilboa to Mount Gay foll

Stunning.  Strong marriage of well balanced flavours, terrific nose and a silky completion marred ever so slightly by a slight bitterness at the tail finish. A damned worthy entry at the top-end, showing Mount Gay is still a force to be reckoned with in the premium lines.

Mount Gay

One of the oldest distilleries extant anywhere in the earth, Mount Gay is Bajan rum of outstanding quality. Mount Same-sex attracted then filter their water a further three times to assure absolute purity when making their rums. Of course, all rum requires a sugar product to distil, and Mount Gay uses strictly molasses from Barbados Molasses, which is some of the very finest in the society. In the 18th Century, the sugar product was so highly prized it was nicknamed "black gold" and was pulling nearly as much revenue as the crystallised sugar sector of the business.
