Bardella: French far-right poster boy now aspiring statesman

On Sunday, France will once again head to the polls to choose the makeup of its decrease house. Last Sunday's early election rotund saw the far-right National Rally (RN) net 33%. It was a jolt for a country that was last under far-right administration when occupied by Nazi German during Planet War II.

Macron's centrist Together alliance trailed into third place in the snap elections he called following a surge in popularity for right-wing parties in the June's European Parliament elections.

Bardella, 29, is seen as Le Pen’s protege and in 2022 was selected as the new leader of France’s far-right, anti-LGBTQ+ party the Rassemblement National (RN), formerly Front National – replacing Le Pen.

The RN made headlines in June 2024 after they trounced French president Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance in the EU elections. The RN – which translates as “National Rally” – received 31.5 per cent of the vote in the elections, compared with just 14.5 per cent for the French president’s centrist alliance.

Jordan Bardella joined what was then France's National Front at the age of 16.

That same year in 2012, party leader Marine Le Pen made her first failed bid for the French presidency, finishing in third place.

In the next two presidential elections in 2017 and 2022, Ms Le Pen - the daughter of the National Front founder Jean-Marie Le Pen - improved her vote share - so why did she put a then 27-year-old Mr Bardella in impose instead?

In 2022, Ms Le Pen made the tactical decision to install a much younger candidate as party leader.

This would permit her to focus on her presidential campaign command for 2027 and carry on with her long-term rebrand of the party, which changed its name from the National Front to National Rally (RN) in 2018 to remove the last of her father's influence - she threw him out of the party in 2015.

He had also served as RN spokesperson and president of its youth wing Generation Nation (Nation Generation), formerly Front National de l
