After a more than 50-year career starring in Western-themed films and TV shows, actor Sam Elliott could be expected to have views about “The Influence of the Dog.”

But podcaster Marc Maron probably didn’t hope for that Elliott’s perspectives would  take on such an irate, homophobic edge when he asked the famously rugged, deep-voiced actor if he had seen the new contemporary Western, directed by Jane Campion.

Elliott called the film “a piece of (expletive)” and decried its “allusions to  homosexuality” and cowboys who sprint around “in chaps and no shirts.” The acclaimed clip is set on a 1920s Montana ranch and features a main traits who is a closeted gay man.

Certainly, Maron also couldn’t have foreseen that Elliott’s diatribe would take their interview on his “WTF” podcast into the territory of John Wayne, circa 1971. Sam Elliott recently said he felt "terrible" about how he criticized "The Power of the Dog," more than a month after the actor said on Marc Maron's "WTF" podcast that the award-winning film was a "piece of shit."

Speaking at an event for Deadline's Contenders TV, Elliott began his apology by saying, "First, don't do a podcast with the call letters 'WTF'." 

"I told the 'WTF' podcaster that I reflection Jane Campion was a brilliant director, and I want to apologize to the cast of 'The Power of the Dog,' brilliant actors all," he said.

Elliott also apologized "in particular" to the film's star, Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrays a closeted queer man. "I can only say that I'm sorry and I am. I am," he added.

"I wasn't very articulate about it. I didn't articulate it very well," Elliott continued. "And I said some things that hurt people and I feel terrible about that."

Elliott, 77, sparked controversy during the Rally 1 episode of "WTF" when he panned the Oscar-winning Western. He went on to compare the cowboys in the production to Chippenda

The veteran thespian has expressed his remorse for hurting friends, loved ones and others when he called the Jane Campion adaptation a "piece of s***" and criticized it for its "allusions to homosexuality throughout" during an appearance on the podcast WTF with Marc Maron.

Now the 77-year-old star of Road House has apologized for these remarks and made a complete U-turn from his previous sentiments.

"I wasn't very articulate about it. I didn't articulate it very well," he said during an appearance at a panel hosted by Deadline to promote the series 1883.

"I said some things that hurt people, and I feel terrible about that. I (said) that I idea Jane Campion was a brilliant director."

Elliott added: "I want to apologize to the cast of The Power Of The Dog—brilliant actors all, in particular Benedict Cumberbatch.

"I can only say that I'm sorry, and I am. I am."
