A new University of Washington study measures changes in sex without condoms among HIV-negative gay and bisexual men who are not taking PrEP.Pixabay
New research from the University of Washington shows that condom use has been trending downward among younger same-sex attracted and bisexual men over the last decade, even when they aren’t taking pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP.
The study, published Feb. 27 in AIDS and Action, measures changes in sex without condoms among HIV-negative lgbtq+ and bisexual men who are not taking PrEP. Using data from the 2014-19 cycles of the American Men’s Internet Survey — a web-based survey of cisgender men ages 15 and older who contain sex with men (MSM) — researchers found that roughly half of HIV-negative men reported using condoms at least sometimes in the last year. That was higher than the 15% of respondents who reported using PrEP.
But HIV-negative MSM who are not using PrEP seem to be not using condoms increasingly often. The study found that the proportion of these men who had

Condom efficacy may have been underestimated, new CDC study suggests
Summary – what's different about this analysis
A new meta-analysis (Johnson) of the efficacy of condoms in preventing HIV transmission via anal sex between gay men has found a considerably higher estimate of their efficacy than two previous analyses.
The new estimate by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds that condoms, used 100% of the time, stop more than nine out of ten HIV infections. Two previous analyses, one published back in 1989 (Detels) and the other in 2015 (Smith) found that they only stopped seven out of ten infections.
This new estimate for condom efficacy in sex between men is much closer to the estimated efficacy for sex between men and women; a synthesis of studies finds an efficacy in the region of 80-85%.
Why is this new estimate of efficacy (91.6%, in the case where the HIV-negative partner is the receptive one) so much higher than previous ones (72.3% for the same risk in the 2015 analysis)?

After seeing row upon row of “her pleasure” condoms at the pharmacy, I wondered if there were any “his and his” condoms on the market–and if so, are they actually designed differently than “his and hers” condoms, or is it pure marketing schtick. Anyone in the know who can help me out?

My WAG is that they’re the same thing. A “her pleasure” condom has extra bumps or ridges or whatever on the outside, to enhance a woman’s experience. Wouldn’t the same condoms enhance a same-sex bottom’s experience?

I used to volunteer at a needle-exchange program on Hotel Street in downtown Honolulu. We also gave out free condoms including some extra-strength ones that were specially made for anal sex. So yes, they are made differently.

Fun fact: Receptive (marketed as “vaginal”) condoms can be used anally as well. There’s a flexible ring inside that holds it in place in the vagina; remove this and it works for penile-anal sex as well.

I have butt sex with my partner. We use regular condoms. You just have to know how to exploit them… and lube it up. Never ripped one in my life. As
