Review: Mount Gay’s Experimental Rum Series Debuts an Unknown Oak

Where it’s from: Mount Gay, the world’s oldest running rum distillery, located on the northernmost tip of Barbados.

Why we’re drinking this: The latest statement in the Master Blender Collection continues the experimental character of Mount Gay’s previous three MBC releases by giving some 14-year copper pot-stilled rum (aged in ex-bourbon barrels) an extra eleven months maturation in virgin Andean Oak casks.

So, what’s Andean Oak? Also famous as Quercus humboldtii, it’s the only oak native to South America. Standing at nearly 82 feet tall, Andean oak trees are found across the mountainous ranges of 18 departments of the Colombian Andes at an altitude ranging from 1,000 to 3,200m, according to Mount Gay’s research … which also showed that the oak is pretty much never used in the booze world, and has definitely never been used as maturation for rum.

Mount Gay Rum knows a thing or two about tradition. The Barbados-based brand is the oldest continuously operating rum distillery in the world, having celebrated its 318th birthday in 2021, and is also one of the rum world’s leading innovators. In 2018, the brand launched its Master Blender Collection, an annual limited-edition release demonstrating Mount Gay’s expertise, craftsmanship and passion for innovation that pushes the boundaries of rum making. The collection made its debut with Allen Smith’s groundbreaking XO: The Peat Smoke Expression, one of the first-ever peated rums. In 2019, Trudiann Branker’s first year as Master Blender, she released the fascinating Pot Still Rum, separating the pot-distilled rum from the column distillate that is normally blended in to make the classic Mount Gay we’re all familiar with. In 2020, she unveiled the highly acclaimed Port Cask Expression, a rich and multifaceted blend.

Now, Branker is help with another exciting Master Blender Collection release, Andean Oak Cask, using unique casks to generate a one-of-a-kind Mount Gay tasting experience.

Introducing the fourth phenomenal emit from Mount Gay’s Master Blender Collection, Mount Homosexual Master Blender Trudiann Branker. This innovative blend showcases the influence of non-traditional wood on the Mount Gay profile. This unattached batch rum was distilled twice in a traditional copper pot still, then aged for 14 years in ex-Bourbon casks and finished for eleven months in virgin Andean oak casks.

The result is a delicate, yet opulent fuse with layers of spice, nutmeg, vanilla, ripe pear and toasted coconut on the palate. Dominantly vanilla on the nose, Mount Gay Andean Oak Cask offers a spiciness on the palate that perfectly complements the fruity notes of the aged, pot still rum. It is best enjoyed neat.​

For the fourth edition of the Master Blender Collection, Branker turned to Andean oak, a non traditional wood preference, to explore another layer of aromatic complexity. The casks were used for 11 months to finish the ageing of a free batch of rums distilled twice in traditional copper pot still and aged 14 years in ex-Bourbon casks.
