Gay sniff
Everybody knows what poppers are, right? Not really. Enjoy the notorious chode, it is still a subject of debate among dumb people with nothing better to communicate about. Some of our interns, who hail from the Middle West and the South, think poppers are those cardiac arrest-inducing fried things that morbidly obese people smother in dippin’ sauce and stuff down their miserable obese throats. On the Coasts, however, we know that poppers have more to do with sniffing something that makes your butthole touch all loose and tingly. Who’s right in this war of words? Modern York is, of course. We sent our bumpkin interns out into the city that never sits (because they’re sore from doing it in the butt all the time) to study the real interpretation of poppers:
VICE: What do poppers represent to you?
Mitra from Brooklyn: It is a video cleaning fluid that people hold. Gay men exploit it to facilitate them have stamina in bed.
You ever sniff a popper?
Once on Flame Island at Cherry Grove, of course.
How was it?
It’s stupid. I was with a bunch of gay dudes and we inhaled it. I recollect saying, “I can feel my head cells colliding.”
Did you get wild?
No. It only lasts 30 second

Poppers
What's the Score?
Poppers are also known as: amyl/butyl/isobutyl nitrite, amyl (especially in Australia, where it's promounced 'ammul'), aromas and by brand names appreciate Liquid Gold, Rush, etc. They're often (but wrongly) called 'nitrates', which is a similar, but unlike chemical.
Poppers are a liquid made from chemicals from the alkyl nitrite family. The name comes from the days when they came in glass capsules that popped when broken open.
Sex on Poppers
Poppers can craft you feel horny, drop your inhibitions and produce orgasms feel stronger. Because they relax the sphincter (the muscle in the arse hole) poppers can make it easier to be fucked or fisted. They can cause a man to lose his hard-on too.
Research shows poppers might play an important role in HIV being passed on. The reasons could be:
- poppers can lower inhibitions, making unsafe sex more likely
- there's a bigger chance of the arse bleeding (poppers expand blood vessels inside the arse)
- and/or poppers might make the immune system weaker for a short time, so that people are more open to infection.

People typically use poppers for a pleasurable feeling of intoxication or euphoria, but some find the life unpleasant and disorientating.
Poppers primarily execute as vasodilators, which means that they expand blood vessels. Having dilated blood vessels can cause:
- a sudden drop in blood pressure
- dizziness
- an increased heart rate
- lightheadedness
- warm sensations throughout the body
If blood pressure drops too low, it may result in fainting or a loss of consciousness.
Poppers also relax the muscles around the anus. Some people report that using poppers enhances their pleasure from anal sex. However, the drug can also reduce the ability to receive an erection.
Poppers may cause other unwanted effects, such as:
- Headaches: Because poppers cause blood vessels in the brain to widen, headaches can result. They can vary in intensity and may persist after the euphoric effects of the drug wear off.
- Respiratory reactions: Inhaling strong chemicals, such as poppers, can affect breathing and other functions of the respiratory tract, leading to sinus problems and wheezing.
- Allergic reactions: Scented poppers can cause problems for pe
