Gay Pizza Reopening

In June, we reported the the infamous gayborhood landmark, Gay Pizza, closed their doors. Many were obviously upset as this was the go-to hot spot for post nightclub sustenance after an evening in the gayborhood.

We are thrilled to announce that Gay Pizza is reopening – (209 S. 13th St. across the road from Woody's)

The two brothers that own the cigar shop next door, Andrew and Mike Cappelli have decided to reopen the space.

"We are changing the identify to Pizzeria Cappelli." said owner Andrew Cappelli, "We own no problem with the nicknames the [community] has given the pizza shop and welcome the names to stay"

There will be a soft opening tonight Friday August 21, and Saturday August 22 starting at 10pm (until 4am) and they will provide a simular menu.

Their official opening with be Wednesday August 26.

We will post more knowledge when we earn it.

Marc Vetri's pays homage to his dad Sal with new Pizzeria Salvy
Pizzeria Salvy is the newest culinary enterprise from Chef Marc Vetri, with Philly style slices at lunch and 12-inch pies.

He makes classics like pepperoni and South Philly Margherita.

But he also added some of his own inventions to the menu, like a kind onion crepe pizza.

He promises his original creations are like nothing you've ever had.

The star of the pizza show is the dough, a thin crust that is "light and airy and flavorful."

For Pizzeria Salvy, Vetri brought back Sal's famous meatballs, which are a staple from Vetri's early restaurant career and a nostalgic family favorite.

Vetri's dad, Sal, says it was his mother's recipe and meatballs were always on the table for Sunday dinners in South Philadelphia.

Growing up, the meatballs were part of Sal's life lessons to his children-always make meatballs w

L&I Shuts Down “Gay Pizza” on 13th Street

Get a compelling long interpret and must-have lifestyle tips in your inbox every Sunday morning — fantastic with coffee!

Here’s why we can’t include anything nice (although I never really found the affectionately named Homo Hut “nice,” so to speak): The popular late-night “Gay Pizza” restaurant, located at 209 South 13th Lane, has been seal down by the city’s Department of Licenses and Inspections.

The “Cease Operations/Stop Operate Order” sign is clearly displayed on the door of the shop, indicating that the location had “no meal license,” and that the “corrective deeds needed to eliminate this condition” are to “obtain food license #3120, Food Prep.”

I spoke with Ron Spencer in L&I this morning who confirmed that the license expired in April of this year. However, according to his records, it appears that the pizza restaurant may have had no license from 2007 to 2014.

We’ve called “Homo Hut” several times to get their response and there’s been no answer. We’ll keep you updated should more knowledge become available.
